 Keberanian Manusia

Dari sebanyak itu peninggalan Jepang di kota kami, hanya sedikit sekali yang Bisa kuingat. saat Jepang datang di situ, aku masih berusia tujuh tahun dan masih pakai celana monyet. Tapi hingga kini aku masih hafal lagu Kimigayo sebagai suatu kenang-kenangan masa kecil, seperti aku juga masih Bisa mengenang bagaimana tentara-tentara Jepang itu sama-sama mandi telanjang di kali kota kami. Untukku sendiri ada peristiwa lucu, saat seorang Jepang bertamu ke rumah kami untuk pertama kali. Dia menaiki sepedaku yang kecil, dan tiba-tiba sepedaku patah. Aku jadi geram dan menjerit dan mengambil batu dan melemparkan batu itu ke kepala Jepang itu. Batu itu batu kecil, sebesar genggaman telapak tanganku yang kecil, dan menimbulkan satu benjolan kecil di kepala Jepang itu. Baru setelah itu kuketahui, Dei-san hanya seorang koki. Tapi, biarpun aku tahu setelah itu bahwa dia hanya seorang koki, namun persahabatanku dengan Dei-san Tak Frustasi tapi semakin erat. Daripadanyalah aku tahu cerita-cerita Momotaro, dan daripadanyalah aku banyak belajar beberapa lagu.

Daripadanyalah pula setelah itu kuketahui, setelah persahabatan kami berlangsung tiga tahun lamanya, kenapa orang-orang di kota kami disuruh membuat gua di bukit-bukit kampungku dan mengapa perempuan-perempuan disuruh mengumpulkan batu-batu kali, dan mengapa tiap-tiap rumah menanam pohon jarak dan kapas, dan mengapa tiap-tiap rumah di sampingnya atau di burinya dibikin lubang perlindungan.

Dei-san Tak memanggil namaku. Ia memanggilku dengan sebutan “kaibodan”.

“Kaibodan” Perkataan Dei-san suatu kali kepadaku.

“Apa?”

“Kamu berani naik kapal terbang?”

“Berani, berani,” sahutku.

Lalu Dei-san menunjuk ke suatu bukit. Dari bukit itu hingga kerendahan lembah ada suatu kawat yang besar, dan pada besoknya kulihat suatu kapal terbang Tak melayang-layang di udara, tapi turun dari bukit itu meluncur ke lembah.

“Untuk apa kapal terbang itu, Dei-san?” tanyaku.

“Untuk berperang.”

“Berperang dengan siapa, Dei-san?” tanyaku.

“Berperang dengan Inggris dan Amerika,”

“Kenapa kita berperang dengan Inggris dan Amerika, Dei-san?”

“sebab kita berani.”

“Kenapa kita berani, Dei-san?”

Dei-san Tak menjawab.

“Kenapa kita berani, Dei-san?”

“sebab Amerika dan Inggris Tak boleh tembak kita.”

“Kenapa Amerika dan Inggris tembak kita, Dei-san?”

“sebab Amerika dan Inggris merupakan musuh kita.”

“Kalau orang tembak kita, Dei-san, itu artinya musuh kita?”

“Ya, ya, kalau orang tembak kita itu artinya musuh kita dan kita musti tembak dia,” Perkataan Dei-san dan setelah itu dipusar-pusarnya rambutku.

Percakapan itu sangat mengesan kepadaku. Kuceritakan pada ibu dan abang dan adik-adikku dan ayahku dan pamanku. Ayah,ibu, dan paman dan nenekku terdiam aja mendengar ceritaku.

“Jangan dia disuruh ke rumah koki itu lagi ...,” Perkataan ibu.

“Ya, ya. Dia bijak dan pinter ngoceh,” Perkataan nenekku.

“He, kau Tak boleh datang-datang lagi ke rumah koki itu,” Perkataan ayah, kali ini dipelototkannya matanya kepadaku. Aku heran kenapa ayah dan ibu dan nenek Tak membolehkan aku datang ke rumah Dei-san, sahabatku itu.

“Dia kawanku. Dia bagus,” kataku bersungut-sungut.

“Dia musuh kita,” Perkataan abangku.

“Jangan kau omong begitu, Karel,” Perkataan ibu sambil menjiwir telinga abangku.

Waktu mau tidur kutanyakan kepada abangku, kenapa Dei-san tiba-tiba jadi musuh kita, sedangkan dia sahabatku dan Inggris dan Amerikalah yang jadi musuh kita. Abangku mau menceritakan sebab-sebabnya, asal aku mau lebih membagikan telingaku untuk dijiwir. Aku membagikan telingaku yang kanan untuk dijiwir.

“Sekarang ceritakanlah,” kataku.

“Paman Oni ditembak Jepang,” Perkataan abangku berbisik.

“Paman Oni ditembak Jepang?”

“Ya, Paman Oni ditembak Jepang.”

“Tak mungkin. Paman Oni musti ditembak Inggris dan Amerika dan bukan ditembak Jepang. Kau telah membohongiku dan aku musti ganti menjiwir telingamu,” kataku. Dan kujiwir telinga abangku.

“Kujiwir lagi telingamu sekali lagi. Dan nanti kuceritakan apa sebab Paman Oni ditembak Jepang.”

Kuberikan telingaku yang kiri sekarang, dan abangku menjiwirnya.

“Ceritakanlah,” kataku.

Abangku bercerita, bahwa tadi sore ayah baru aja menguburkan Paman Oni. Paman Oni telah ditembak oleh Jepang sebab mencuri Camilan.

“Uu salah Paman Oni. Kenapa dia mencuri. Bukankah kita dulu dimasukkan mami sama-sama di dalam kakus satu hari sebab mencuri uang di bawah bantal?” kucungirkan telunjukku ke hidung untuk membikin abangku malu.

“Itu sebab Paman Oni lapar.”

“Kenapa dia Tak makan?” tanyaku.

“sebab Jepang itu cuma menyuruh Paman Oni kerja keras, tapi memberi makannya cuma secemil aja. Itu sebab Paman Oni lapar.”

Aku berpikir sejenak.

“Ya, memang. Itu sebab Paman Oni lapar dan mencuri,” kataku.

“sebab Paman Oni mencuri, Jepang menembak dia,” Perkataan abangku Karel.

“Kenapa Paman Oni ditembak cuma sebab mencuri aja, dan kenapa kita dulu mencuri rambutan Tak ditembak Papa?” tanyaku.

“sebab Paman Oni berkelahi melawan Jepang,” Perkataan abangku.

“Kenapa Paman Oni berkelahi melawan Jepang?” tanyaku.

“sebab dia lapar. sebab dia berani,” Perkataan abangku.

“sebab dia lapar, sebab dia berani,” kataku mengulangi.

Aku berpikir sejenak.

“Kalau begitu memang betul-betul Dei-san musuh kita. Aku mau menembaknya,” kataku, menambahi lagi.

“Kau berani menembak si Dei-san koki itu?” tanya abang.

Aku terdiam. Aku lalu ingat Dei-san yang keringatnya busuk itu dan tubuhnya besar itu dan tiba-tiba aku takut padanya. Aku ingat, sedangkan sama temanku Dulhak aja aku tak berani, apalagi pada Dei-san, yang lebih besar.

Tapi sejak itulah Dei-san kuanggap musuhku. Aku tak pernah lagi datang masuk ke dapurnya untuk mengharapkan bubur kacang hijau atau kue moci atau ingin belajar lagu Jepang.

Esoknya, semalaman aku tak Bisa tidur mengenang paman kami yang sudah mati itu. Paman Oni merupakan pamanku yang bagus dan Tak patut mati ditembak. Paman Oni penghabisan kali mengajak aku ke pasar malam dan melihat bioskop di tanah lapang. Aku ingat kembali lagu itu, dan di layar putih kelihatan pohon-pohon beruntuhan. Kuingat kalimat lagu itu: “Pohon ditebang dari hutan”.

Dan setelah itu pohon-pohon yang runtuh ditebang itu, hanyut dibawa air sungai. Kuingat lagu itu lagi;

“Hanyut berkumpul di muara”.

“Mari kerjakan jadi kapal”, kulihat kapal, dan kudengar lagi lagu dan bendera berkibar:

“Untuk Asia Timur Raya”.

Ingatanku mati di situ sebab tiba-tiba kuingat lagi wajah paman Oni. Paman Oni mengatakan akan pergi ke hutan menebang Ebonit untuk bikin kapal pengawal laut, menunggu kedatangan musuh.

Kenangan pada Paman Oni makin hari semakin kabur dan hilang, kenangan itu timbul kembali saat beberapa waktu setelah itu ada lagi pasar malam. saat itu aku duduk-duduk termenung di beranda dan ingat pada Paman Oni yang melarang aku menghembus-hembus karet pelembungan yang kudapat banyak sekali hanyut di air kali. Paman Oni Berongsang dan Paman Oni pun membelikan pelembungan berwarna di pasar malam.

Kawan-kawanku mengajak pergi ke pasar malam. Aku menolak.

“Kita Bisa Camilan roti keju. Dibagi-bagi,” Perkataan kawanku.

Kutolak.

“Kami kemarin malam Bisa limun. Tak dibayar.” Kutolak.

Tiba-tiba kulihat sepatu sepasang di dekat kakiku. saat kepalaku kuangkat, kulihat Dei-san berdiri di depanku, membawa sebungkusan besar entah apa isinya, bersenyum kepadaku, dan mengajak aku ke pasar malam. Kutolak.

“Saya Tak mau,” kataku.

saat ditariknya tanganku, aku berteriak, “Bagero!”

“Nanda omaya!” katanya dan dipicitnya tanganku dengan gemas.

“Nanda omay lu!” teriakku.

Tiba-tiba kudengar suara ibuku memanggil namaku dan Cepet-Cepet aku lari ke dalam. Aku dicubit ibu dengan kukunya yang tajam dan aku menangis dan tiba-tiba tangisku berhenti sebab mendengar deru kapal terbang.

Tiba-tiba kami dengar bunyi sirene. Dan setelah itu abangku yang baru pulang dari pasar malam membawa suatu kertas. Dia mengatakan bahwa Amerika dan Inggris akan membom kota kami.

Semalaman aku tak puas-puasnya bertanya kepada abangku.
“Kau ceritalah kembali Karel,” bujukku.

“Kita wajib masuk lubang perlindungan di belakang.”

“Kenapa?”

“Kita musti nyumput. Nanti kita Bisa mati.”

“Mati seperti Paman Oni?”

Abangku tiba-tiba menarik selimutnya sebab ibu kami masuk ke kamar kami. Aku pun menarik selimutku dan saat ibuku ke luar, kubuka lagi selimut dan bertanya, “Karel, Karel. Kau sudah tidur?”

“Aku sudah tidur.”

“Kenapa kau Bisa ngomong kalau sudah tidur?”

“Aku mimpi,” Perkataan Karel.

Besoknya ibu dan ayahku dan nenekku melarang kami pergi ke pasar malam, Dua hari setelah itu kami mendengar lagi pesawat terbang, dan Tak lama setelah itu mendentumlah dentuman yang menggegar, masuk ke dalam telingaku yang kecil. Malam itu merupakan malam pertama kota menjadi gelap dan untuk pertama kami masuk lubang perlindungan. Tapi besok paginya, beberapa buah mobil dengan pengeras suara berkeliling pula di keliling kota kami dan berteriak-teriak mengatakan musuh sudah kalah dan mengundang orang-orang pergi ke pasar malam. Besok sorenya lagi mobil-mobil pakai pengeras suara itu berputar seputar kota lagi memanggil orang melihat pasar malam. Dan saat abangku membawa lagi kertas yang katanya dijatuhkan dari pesawat udara, panggilan untuk datang ke pasar malam semakin riuh dan esok berikutnya sudah lebih sepuluh mobil memanggil-manggil.

Ibu tetap melarang kami ke luar. Ibu mengatakan, dua hari lagi “Sekutu” akan membom kota. Dan memang, pada malam yang dikatakan ibu itu, menggelegarlah kota. Dan telingaku yang kecil mendengar bunyi yang sebesar itu kusumbat Cepet-Cepet dengan kapas dan gigiku Cepet-Cepet menggigit karet yang menyantol dengan tali dileherku.

Tiba-tiba ayah masuk lubang perlindungan kami.

“Sekutu membom pasar malam.”

setelah itu ayah ke luar lagi. Dan saat aku meminta Turut, ibu menjitak kepalaku. Datang lagi ayah. Ayah cuma berkata pada ibu, “Bukit Guha merah semua dimakan api.”

“Bukit Guha?” tanya ibu.

“Ya, Bukit Guha.”

Lalu ibu memekik dan menangis, “Adikku ada di sana disuruh membikin terowongan.”

“Bukan yang di selatan. Yang di utara,” Perkataan ayah.

Ibu menggenggam jarinya dan memelukku.

“Syukur, syukurlah. Coba Pak ke luar melihat yang di selatan.”

“Yang di selatan Tak dibom,” Perkataan ayah.

“Tapi cobalah lihat,” Perkataan ibu. Ibu tampaknya agak marah.

Kenapa ibu tampaknya marah pada ayah, dan kenapa yang di utara, dan kenapa ibu menangis, dan kenapa ibu masih memelukku dan berkata syukurlah dua kali. Aku tak tahu. Tapi kenapa ibu masih menangis kelika ayah ke luar lubang perlindungan dan kami mendengar bunyi dentuman lagi.

Ayah masuk lagi ke lubang perlindungan.

“Bukit di utara dibakarnya semua. Kota juga terbakar dekat gudang Sindenbu.”

“Bukit selatan Tak.”

“Guha selatan Tak.”

“Syukur, syukurlah,” Perkataan ibu.

Sejak kejadian itu memang selama lebih satu minggu kota menjadi ramai kembali. Kami telah kembali pergi ke sekolah seperti dahulu. Dan kami melihat toapekong hancur, gudang Sindenbu hancur, rumah Haji Munap hancur. Di tiap-tiap rubuhan kehancuran itu aku dan kawanku berdebat dan tiap-tiap kami mempunyai cerita yang berlain-lain.

Suatu sore, saat aku minta izin untuk main tali ke rumah Wati, ibu melarang. Ibu berkata, sore itu seluruh isi rumah Tak boleh pergi kecuali ayah. Kami duduk-duduk di beranda saat itu.

Karel yang paling dulu melihat. Karel menjerit. Ia melihat ke jalan bengkel di belah utara, sambil menunjuk-nunjuk.

Aku masih ingat dengan ingatanku yang kecil, serombongan beruk berbaris. Ibu menarik kami semuanya ke dalam rumah. Tapi kami diizinkan ibu mengintip.

setelah itu ia berdiri dan berhenti di depan rumah Somad. Lalu kami lihat berombongan mereka berbaris dan masuk ke pekarangan rumah Somad. Seorang Jepang memakai senapan tiba-tiba berhenti. Jepang itu berdiri seperti tentara bersiap. Seorang Jepang lain lagi sedang mengayuhkan sepeda lalu turun, dan berhenti, berhenti seperti orang bersiap.

Kuperhatikan wajah abangku, ingin tahu apa yang dimaksudkannya.

Lalu abangku mengintip. Lalu aku juga mengintip, kami melihat beruk-beruk itu memanjati pohon pisang, pohon- pohon sawo, pohon-pohon pepaya di kebun Somad.

“Kebun kita juga,” Perkataan abang berteriak.

Lalu abangku melompat ke ruang tengah, tapi tiba-tiba ibu menangkap tangannya. Dengan isyarat ibu memanggilku dan dengan isyarat telunjuk ibu menyuruh kami masuk kamar kami.

Semalaman aku terus bertanya kepada abangku kenapa beruk-beruk itu datang sebegitu banyak, tapi abangku bertanya kepadaku kenapa Jepang-jepang itu tak mau menembak. Dan aku menjawab bahwa aku tak tahu. Abangku mengatakan bahwa aku goblok. Dan aku pun lekas-lekas mengaku bahwa aku goblok dalam hal itu, tapi aku bertanya pula, untuk apa beruk-beruk itu datang. Dari mana mereka datang?

Biarpun hampir hingga pagi kami tak tidur, tapi kami tetap bangun pagi-pagi sebelum dibangunkan ibu seperti biasanya.

Ibu menasihatkan supaya kami tak ke luar rumah, sebab beruk-beruk itu masih banyak berkeliaran di seluruh kota.
